The paper deals with some Greek metrical imperial age inscriptions related to the sacred, with a specific focus on the communication modes, the literary aspects and the strategies aimed at conveying the content to potential readers. After discussing some pagan votive inscriptions that show a semantic function of their layout (EDR 100041, Capua, 2nd c.; EDR 173505, Catania 3rd-4th c.; IGUR 1638; IGUR 149, 2nd-3rd c.; IGUR 102a-b), paper briefly come back on the crucial stylistic choices problem in relation to the readability of metrical inscriptions. The last section discusses the relationship between paideia and religious faith, offering a new assessment of the inscription of the physician Dioskoros (EDR 073767, Milan 4th c.).
