This short article delves into the relationship between democracy, care, and humanity moving from Italo Calvino's short novel "La giornata d'uno scrutatore" ("The Watcher", 1963). Calvino's interpretation of the impact of institution on the life and substance of the human being is here analysed with respect to his reading of Marxism and Communism.
