Soggettività transgender nello spazio della pena tra stigma multiplo e palese negazione

The prison is an emblematic case of an institution based on gender binarism and the hierarchisation of masculinities, structured by a system of intersectional violence that, in the specific case of transgender people, represents a continuum of discrimination experienced in the external social fabric. This paper aims to contribute to the underdeveloped debate on the situation of transgender people in Italian prisons. Aware of the preliminary nature of the proposed analysis, the first part of the essay places the problem of the imprisonment of transgender people in a European context. The second part focuses on the Italian prison system. Finally, the paper concludes with a qualitative analysis focusing on the subjective experiences of transgender people in prison, but also questioning the significance of transgender imprisonment within trans-specific associations.
