Through an analysis of two recent Russian history textbooks for Russian universities, the aim of this article is to illustrate the changes occurred in Putin’s Russia as far as the historical narrative of the Russian 20th century is concerned. During the last fifteen years the Russian government has promoted a systematic review of the Soviet past in a patriotic direction and restricted the space for debate on modern Russian history in the country. This policy, developed at various levels (by rewriting textbooks, launching patriotic media campaigns etc.), has impinged upon the work of historians, influencing their judgements.
