The earliest recollection of Maximus the Greek in liturgical literature occurs in the Authentic narrative about the arrival in Rus of Maximus the Greek and how he suffered until his death (Skazanie izvěstno o prichode na Rus Maksima Grěka i kako preterpě do skončanija svoego) written by Monk Isajja Kamenčanin at the end of the sixteenth century. Textual analysis allows us to complement the list of its sources with Maximus the Greek’s Terrible and memorable narrative and the perfect form of monastic life (Povest’ strašna i dostopamjatna i o soveršennom inočeskom žitel’stve), which contains the first Slavic biography of Girolamo Savonarola. In particular, the investigation shows that the portrait of Maximus Monk Isajja offers coincides with the one that Maximus had offered for Savonarola. The reason for this transposition is found in the fact that in Moscovia Мaximus had so closely emulated Savonarola as to become the bearer of the same ideal of sanctity as the one embodied by the Italian friar.
