Between the eleventh and the fourteenth centuries,in northern Latium that is to say on a subregional sphere, at least three different monetary areas are identifiable. Starting from the north-east and moving towards the Tyrrhenian coast, the first area is the Sabina; the second one is focused around Viterbo and the Via Cassia, while the third is to be identified in the coastal strip. These three areas, caracterised by the prominence of different dominant coins, began to emerge as such already in the twelfth century, when monetary circulation - not only in Latium but in Italy in general - increased thanks to the opening of new mints or to the success of foreign coins capable of resolving local shortage of coins. This paper is an attempt to delineate the different role that the issues of Pavia, Lucca, Rome, Viterbo and, later, Perugia and other minor mints had in the region.
