Il Foro Napoleone a Lucca: una piazza per celebrare l'Eroe e la città

Among the projects launched in many Italian centres during the years of French domination to respond to the functionalist and symbolic demands of the new world, the monumental piazza created in Lucca by Princess Élisa constitutes one of the most significant examples of the theme of the Bonaparte Forum. A place at the service of the community that stages the mass spectacle of architecture. In order to realise this ambitious intervention, it was necessary to proceed with the demolition of extensive parts of the ancient city, in defiance of the strongly critical position expressed by a few isolated personalities, including the city's maire. The contribution investigates the choices made in the name of a building art capable of imagining the great themes redesigning the face of the capital, reflecting on the relationship between safeguarding the historical heritage and reinventing an urban morphology in line with the times.

Tra i progetti avviati in molti centri italiani negli anni della dominazione francese, per rispondere alle istanze funzionalistiche e simboliche del mondo nuovo, la monumentale piazza creata a Lucca dalla principessa Elisa costituisce uno degli esempi più significativi tra quelli aventi per oggetto il tema del Foro Bonaparte. Un luogo al servizio della collettività che mette in scena lo spettacolo di massa dell’architettura. Per realizzare l’ambizioso intervento fu necessario procedere alla demolizione di estesi brani della città antica, in disprezzo della posizione fortemente critica espressa da alcune isolate personalità, tra cui il maire cittadino. Il contributo indaga le scelte operate in nome di un’arte edificatoria capace d’immaginare i grandi temi che ridisegnano il volto della capitale, riflettendo sul rapporto tra salvaguardia del patrimonio storico e reinvenzione di una morfologia urbana in linea con i tempi.
