The article deals with Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften translated into Italian. Starting at the end of the 1950s with Musil-reception in Italy, the first section of the article presents a historical excursus on the Italian editions of the novel, and highlights how they differ from one another, with a particular focus on how Italy contributed to international philological research on Musil’s masterpiece. The second part of the article offers a paradigmatic analysis of Musil’s style, comparing the original text with the two best-known Italian editions of the novel. The analyses demonstrate how his unique com bination of typical traits of scientific and literary style can be translated successfully into Italian. Other features of his style, closely related to the German linguistic system, have no equivalents in Italian, for which an example is given through the analysis of the linguistic configuration of the ›other state‹.
