The process of the evolution of Bientina can be compared to the literary genre that goes by the name of Bildungsroman, which here – as in Heinrich von Oftendingen by Novalis – was left unfinished. This is a stratified territory whose identifying characteristics were not swept away by neglect, war, or natural disaster, but by apparently deliberate choices that over time have revealed themselves to be incomprehensible. While in the past, in similar areas, building has been done on what had already been built, for a long time building in the built environment meant not going beyond the dichotomy of conservation vs. innovation, with the former strenuously defending the necessity of primum non nocere and the latter strongly asserting the technique of tabula rasa. Missing in many operations has been the ability to resist the passage of time—a resistance not so much in terms of materials as of phenomena, the ability not to seem out of place once the novelty has worn off. This is what the site is waiting for: an architect with the gift of a sense of measure strong enough not to be seduced by the facile siren songs of change at all costs, but also sufficient courage and talent to add to the site more than it has lost in the past, capable of critically composing the space but above all of becoming its narrator, its writer, of fitting properly into the plot already written by history, of generating, in a word, a Bildungsarchitektur, a coming-of-age architecture.
