This paper introduces the contributions presented in a series of seminars in Pisa dedicated to the Rule of Law and to the elaboration and application of this principle within the European Union, with particular regard to the European Rule of Law Mechanism activated by the European Commission as of 2020. Starting from the classical definitions of Rule of Law, the essay attempts to deepen its contents and current meaning through the analysis of the different formants (doctrinal, normative and jurisprudential); in the conclusions, a symptomatic reconstruction of Rule of Law is proposed and the difficulties of its transplantation into contexts foreign to the Western legal tradition are highlighted.
