Il saggio prende in esame due personaggi dei Promessi Sposi, il dottor Azzecca-garbugli e il podestà di Lecco, che sono le figure di giuristi che si incontrano nel capolavoro di Manzoni; il primo, un causidico intrallazzatore e imbroglione, il secondo un giudice prono alle istanze dei forti e insensibile alle ragioni della giustizia.
