The article aims to examine Beatrice Portinari’s figure in the Nineteenth Century, investigated from the perspective of its representation in works of general use and consumption – such as a series of novels and short stories published between 1840 and 1870, and through the conferences, especially those held in Florence in 1890, on the sixth centenary of Beatrice’s death. The reception of the figure of Beata Beatrix in the Romantic and Risorgimento era leads us to understand how her physiognomy is transfigured, starting from the pages of the Vita Nova and the Commedia from the nineteenth century to our days, away from its original wisdom and allegorical truth to the point of offering us a perspective on modernity’s imagination.
L’articolo si propone di prendere in esame la figura di Beatrice Portinari nel XIX secolo, indagata dalla prospettiva della sua rappresentazione in opere di larga fruizione e consumo – quali una serie di romanzi e racconti pubblicati fra il 1840 e il 1870 –, e attraverso il genere della conferenza, in particolare quelle tenutesi a Firenze, nel 1890, in occasione del VI centenario della morte di Beatrice. La ricezione della figura di Beata Beatrix in epoca romantica e risorgimentale ci porta a comprendere come la sua fisionomia si trasfiguri a partire dalle pagine della Vita nova e della Commedia dall’Ottocento ai nostri giorni, allontanandola dalla sua verità originaria sapienziale e allegorica, al punto da offrirci una prospettiva originale sull’immaginario della modernità.
