This chapter examines three paper-registers of sentences, fines and penalties relating to Montieri in Southern Tuscany and stored in the diocesan archive of Volterra. This type of source such as judicial documents, not widespread especially for ecclesiastical lordships, has shed light on the complexity of the rural lordship at the early 14 th century. Thanks to these documents, it is possible to dwell on the administration of the castle and the guarding of the walls and on the appointment of the custodians.
