Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability to make decisions or perform tasks by machines based on a training process. Among the various sectors in which AI is used, healthcare is no an exception, but the risks associated with its use in medical devices may be unacceptable. This work aims to highlight the main barriers to the application of AI in medical devices to date and how open-source design philosophy can be an advantage in overcoming these barriers, through a practical example, named Palpreast, a device for breast self-examination.

Abstract
