The great revival of Hermeneumata studies in recent decades followed Dionisotti’s momentous discovery (Dionisotti 1982), but was not solely the addition of a new text. Hermeneumata offer important insights into ancient schooling practices, ancient bilingualism, and perhaps most crucially ‘informal Latin’ (Ferri 2008), since the dialogic texts attempt to reproduce in a written medium realistic conversations using simple, everyday vocabulary, with no parodic or comic intent, in a way that no ancient literary text ever attempted to do. Bilingual glossaries have helped to clarify many important passages in an idiosyncratic and badly transmitted text as Petronius’s Satyricon (Heraeus 1899), and today the possibility of comparison with epigraphic and papyrlogical collections and databases has repeatedly shown the reliability and richness of the vocabulary transmitted in Hermeneumata glossaries, which covered areas of the lexicon ignored or marginalized by the ancient literary evidence.
