The present contribution is aimed at stimulating a discussion of research and teaching approaches on the set of linguistic evidences differing in time, space, use and context that traditionally constitute the material through which the Sogdian language has come to be defined and described. Or much more simply, this work is an attempt to bring into the Middle Iranian Studies in general and into the Sogdian Studies in particular, insights into the role of (classical) philology and historical-comparative linguistics already widely assimilated in other fields of study with similar isssues. Since the volume devoted to sciences, philosophy and literature in Iranian world, the topic chosen might seem out of place; instead, it focuses on the Sogdian language as a means of transmission of different knowledge.
