A.S. Byatt’s 1993 collection, The Matisse Stories, dramatizes the problem of female identity and self-consciousness by focussing on several female figures in search of individual balance and self-acceptance, caught in a climactic moment of crisis. The essay provides a structural and thematic analysis of the three stories by highlighting the author’s attention to symmetries and correspondences within the collection. Specific attention is also devoted to the interaction between writing and visual arts, namely Matisse’s paintings and poetics.

Abstract
