Luni, le domus presso Porta Marina: ceramiche da fuoco, comuni ed anfore dalle stratigrafie tardo-antiche

We present the Late Roman cooking wares, coarse wares and amphorae found in the excavations carried out in the southern area of Luni, near Porta a Mare. So far, part of an insula has been brought to light, consisting of two domus, both built in the early 1st century BC and which underwent spoliation and rebuilding through the centuries. Although the cooking and coarse wares were mainly of local/regional production, there were also small numbers of imports from North Africa, the area of Latium- Campania and perhaps from Corsica and the Eastern Empire. Moreover, as cooking vessels, soapstone wares were imported from Alpine regions. Similarly, the amphorae, both regional (Empoli type) and imported, provide evidence that this quarter of Luni also continued to be highly involved in Mediterranean trade up to the 7th-8th century AD, confirming the results of the excavations carried out in other parts of the city in the 1970s.
