Tourism is a relevant industry that can have a significant economic, social, and environmental impact. Therefore, the challenges related to sustainable development have a specific application for tourism. This paper discusses the meaning of sustainable tourism, considering the components of the current idea of sustainable development, and how the elements of sustainable tourism can be found in the international instruments regarding sustainable development (namely, the UN 2030 Agenda) and tourism, especially in the context of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Within this framework, the paper highlights and analyses the conflicting principles and interests behind the idea of sustainable development and sustainable tourism, and how they relate to the latest trends in European and Italian law, which emphasize the importance of the environmental and ecological components of sustainability.

Abstract
Tourism is a relevant industry that can have a significant economic, social, and environmental impact. Therefore, the challenges related to sustainable development have a specific application for tourism. This paper discusses the meaning of sustainable tourism, considering the components of the current idea of sustainable development, and how the elements of sustainable tourism can be found in the international instruments regarding sustainable development (namely, the UN 2030 Agenda) and tourism, especially in the context of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Within this framework, the paper highlights and analyses the conflicting principles and interests behind the idea of sustainable development and sustainable tourism, and how they relate to the latest trends in European and Italian law, which emphasize the importance of the environmental and ecological components of sustainability.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
