This article proposes an analysis of a few literary structures of Philo- stratus’ Vitae Sophistarum. As a matter of fact, these structures appro- priately express the perception of an important change in the relation between the Roman power and the Greek sophists. New intellectual figures begin to play a role at Rome and the influence of previous so- phists starts to fade out. Finally, the author carefully investigates the strategies of inclusion and exclusion adopted by Philostratus in the selection of his vitae.
