In a given geographical context, it is challenging to distinguish how much the social and cultural environment, on one hand, and the landscape with its peculiarities, on the other, influence the character and thoughts of its inhabitants. While acknowledging the interweaving of these conditioning factors, this article focuses on the interactions between the psyche and the landscape. Particularly considering the case of utopian and metropolitan landscapes, the article explores insights drawn from Plato, More, Campanella, Simmel, and Benjamin. In the background, serving as additional interpretative keys, are ideas expressed in the Hippocratic treatise on Airs, Waters, Places, and in Aristotle, Montesquieu, Vico, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche.

Abstract
In a given geographical context, it is challenging to distinguish how much the social and cultural environment, on one hand, and the landscape with its peculiarities, on the other, influence the character and thoughts of its inhabitants. While acknowledging the interweaving of these conditioning factors, this article focuses on the interactions between the psyche and the landscape. Particularly considering the case of utopian and metropolitan landscapes, the article explores insights drawn from Plato, More, Campanella, Simmel, and Benjamin. In the background, serving as additional interpretative keys, are ideas expressed in the Hippocratic treatise on Airs, Waters, Places, and in Aristotle, Montesquieu, Vico, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
