The paper will be divided into three parts. In the first part, I will describe the concept of emancipation, its historical evolution, and its connection with the concepts of freedom, autonomy, and independence. In the second part,I will move on to consider the notion of care and the ethics of care first elaborated by Carol Gilligan. I will consider the main critics of care focusing on the problematic relationship between care and emancipation. Finally, in the third part, I will show that emancipatory care is possible and indeed necessary.

Abstract

The paper will be divided into three parts. In the first part, I will describe the concept of emancipation, its historical evolution, and its connection with the concepts of freedom, autonomy, and independence. In the second part,I will move on to consider the notion of care and the ethics of care first elaborated by Carol Gilligan. I will consider the main critics of care focusing on the problematic relationship between care and emancipation. Finally, in the third part, I will show that emancipatory care is possible and indeed necessary.
