In this paper, we first consider how the environmental crisis has been managed in the last decades at the transnational level, and what has been the record of international governance with regard to ecological issues. In opposition to such management, mobilizations developed at transnational and national levels alike. In the second part of the paper, we focus on the Italian case by first reviewing the features and evolution of the national “environmental archipelago” (Diani 1995) and then considering the characteristics of Italian FFF activists, basing on several researches that we have been conducting in the last months. Why Italy has been one of most engaged countries in environmental protests during 2019? What are the relations between the considerable relevance of popular protest and the notable electoral defeat of Green parties in Italy?

Abstract
In this paper, we first consider how the environmental crisis has been managed in the last decades at the transnational level, and what has been the record of international governance with regard to ecological issues. In opposition to such management, mobilizations developed at transnational and national levels alike. In the second part of the paper, we focus on the Italian case by first reviewing the features and evolution of the national “environmental archipelago” (Diani 1995) and then considering the characteristics of Italian FFF activists, basing on several researches that we have been conducting in the last months. Why Italy has been one of most engaged countries in environmental protests during 2019? What are the relations between the considerable relevance of popular protest and the notable electoral defeat of Green parties in Italy?I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
