ABSTRACT - This article aims to focus attention not, as it has mainly been done so far, on the presumed sources tacitly used by Gellius for his quotations in the Noctes Atticae, but on the sources explicitly declared by him. After discussing the reliability of these indications, the article proposes their classification into various categories which frequently overlap (quotations declared first or second hand, quotations from memory, quotations in the context of anecdotal stories, quotations resulting from collations of manuscripts consulted in certain libraries). The article therefore try to draw an overall balance of these first surveys particularly in relation to the quotations of archaic Latin poetry and offer some methodological remarks in the perspective of future, more systematic treatments of this type of quotations in Gellius.
