Distribution and demographic investigations of Fritillaria montana Hoppe (Liliaceae) in Tuscany The autohrs report an updated distribution of Fritillaria montana Hoppe (Liliaceae) in Tuscany by the analysis of herbarium specimens, bibliographic references and records in the field. F. montana is quoted for eight different localities, three in southern Tuscany and five in northern Tuscany of which one is not here confirmed and one is new. A total of 9273 individuals were counted, more than half concentrated in a single population (Mount Cetona). In all populations a numerical predominance of juvenile individuals (always more than 70%) was evidenced, respect to immature adult plants and flowering ones; this likely indicates a high juvenile mortality in this species, but also populations substantially at equilibrium. The extinction risk in Tuscany is mainly due to the possible habitat degradation and reduction, leading the authors to consider this species as Nearly Threatened (NT) according to the IUCN criteria for Red List categories.
