In the “Rumjancev Collection” of the works of Maximus the Greek, chapter 36 deals with a text entitled On inner fasting (O vnutrennem poste), the authorship of which is deemed doubtful. The aim of this essay is to identify the text in relation to what was known and traceable to Maximus and to reflect on the reasons for its inclusion in the collection of his works. A detailed study of the patristic and humanistic tradition, the Slavic liturgical tradition and various Slavic manuscript catalogues, allows us to identify the On inner fasting as one of the accompanying texts of the Skitskij ustav of the second and third editions. This makes it possible to establish the precedence of the text in relation to Maximus and his time and to reconstruct the humanistic process that determined its recovery and semanticizationas a piece significant for the idea of religious reform advocated and defended by Maximus. The text, hitherto unpublished, is offered as an appendix to the essay and is accompanied by its Italian translation.
