This contribution investigates the influence of the principles of freedom and self-determination in the most recent developments in comparative family law. In particular, it addresses the following issues: new forms of parenthood (multi-parent families) and pre-conception parenthood agreements; possible legal instruments to recognize polyamorous relationships and “chosen families”; reproductive rights and protection of the status of the children born abroad by surrogacy, with particular regard to Italian law.
