From November 2004 to June 2006, 224 faecal samples of 118 horses from three different typologies of farms in Tuscany (Italy) (box and paddock or only paddock with animals imported every year and treated with drugs active against cestodes and one organic farm with untreated and permanently on pasture horses) were examined for tapeworms eggs. The efficacy of a treatment with a combination of ivermectin and praziquantel was also assessed in 36 positive horses. Overall, 20.5% (46/224) of faecal samples were found positive for eggs of Anoplocephalidae; Anoplocephala perfoliata was found in all the positive faecal samples, while Anoplocephaloides (Paranoplocephala) mamillana was found in only one. Within examined farms, horses from the organic one had the lowest prevalence, while the highest values were found in imported animals from the farm where horses were kept in box and paddocks. In the third farm the higher number of infected animals were found within those imported from about six months. All treated animals were negative at faecal examinations 14 days after treatment
