University and place-making. The role in the analysis, animation, and development of territories. In recent years, in the academic and political debate, the growing importance of the university’s role in activating territorial development processes has been underlined, especially in the most marginal areas. Starting from the most recent international theoretical models regarding the “quadruple/quintuple helix” and the “engaged university”, this contribution aims to underline the contribution of the university and of geographical research in the construction and animation of territories, through: a) the planning of investigations on the terrain and spatial analysis with the involvement of local communities; b) participation in the construction of networks between actors and in the dynamics of regional and local governance; c) the contribution to processes of generative resilience and economic and social development.
