The chapter constructs the history of small town of Guardiagrele (Abruzzo) using inscriptions from the church of St. Maria Maggiore. The examination of architectural and liturgical fragments, as well as their epigraphical texts, reveals the activity of Germanic artists on the territory of Abruzzo and an important connection with the arts in Naples during the fourteenth century. Furthermore, the analysis of the inscriptions provides chronological information on church building and on the history of the Guardiagrele commune. In particular, the inscription on the bell tower, never edited before, reveals the communal motto and its visual connections to the coats of arms which allegorises the unity of the Universitas (Commune), recognized after 1414
