A few years ago,a study by toxicologists at the University of Florence had revived the hypothesis of arsenic poisoning. The results of current research, revealing the presence of Plasmodium falciparum proteins in the spongy bone tissue of Francesco I and immature forms of P. falciparum in the erythrocytes, of another unidentified Medici, confirmed the historical sources, according to which the Grand Duke died of tertian malaria.
