The present paper addresses the question of the relationship of the Latin periphrasis coepi+infinitive with the Greek construction ἄρχομαι+infinitive. The analysed corpus includes all the occurrences of the Latin construction coepi+infinitive in the Cena Trimalchionis, a part of Petronius’ Satyricon and a selection of the occurrences of ἄρχομαι+infinitive in the Ancient Greek texts. The result of this study shed light on the use of the Latin periphrasis to highlight the Greek origin of Petronius’ characters.
