The essay explores dynamics of transformation that acted in depth and breadth, changing social and political structures in their overall interplay at the transition between the 11th and 12th centuries, precisely during the lifetime and rule of Countess Matilda. Of this general process I focus on one specific aspect, and on a particular region. The aim is to answer the following question, with respect to the kinship groups that together constituted the aristocratic circle closest to the countess and the most distinct stratum of urban society in the city of Lucca, the political heart of Tuscany. How did the forms and spaces of action and cooperation change?
