The article discusses Strabo’s description of northern Syria, focussing on a well-known passage of the Geography which, for various reasons, has attracted the attention of scholars. Particularly influential has been the interpretation and topographical reconstruction of Sir Ronald Syme, who was highly critical and dismissive of the geographer’s work. A thorough analysis of this passage and a comparison with what we know from the archaeological investigations, however, helps us to better understand and to appreciate Strabo’s description.

Abstract
The article discusses Strabo’s description of northern Syria, focussing on a well-known passage of the Geography which, for various reasons, has attracted the attention of scholars. Particularly influential has been the interpretation and topographical reconstruction of Sir Ronald Syme, who was highly critical and dismissive of the geographer’s work. A thorough analysis of this passage and a comparison with what we know from the archaeological investigations, however, helps us to better understand and to appreciate Strabo’s description.File in questo prodotto:
