This paper aims to analyze the political thought of Michael Oakeshott starting from the reading of Human conduct, in which the English philosopher analyzes the idea of ​​civil association in order to rethink on a new basis the idea of ​​political community, well-suited with the current debate raised by the problems of value pluralism ​​and decision making processes that characterize the European identity; i. e., an idea that it can only be realized in the awareness that we must set aside the belief into one overall objective or into the same comprehensive doctrine, according to a conception of rules and institutions as procedural and formal conditions, that do not reflect any particular will decide upon by the human desire to establish common needs.
