The invention relates to a catalytic process for transforming levulinic acid or its esters or directly a renewable biomass into 5-methylbutyrolactone (also known as gamma-valerolactone, GVL) by using in the same time and in a synergic way an hydrogenating and an acid catalytic system. This invention allows to employ as starting material also a raw biomass in an “one pot” process. The process of the instant invention allows to perform the hydrogenation step with high yields in GVL, working under very mild reaction conditions. GVL is an import platform chemical for pharmaceuticals, food industry, biopolymers synthesis and can be used as a fuel additive, offering higher performances with respect to bioethanol.

Abstract
The invention relates to a catalytic process for transforming levulinic acid or its esters or directly a renewable biomass into 5-methylbutyrolactone (also known as gamma-valerolactone, GVL) by using in the same time and in a synergic way an hydrogenating and an acid catalytic system. This invention allows to employ as starting material also a raw biomass in an “one pot” process. The process of the instant invention allows to perform the hydrogenation step with high yields in GVL, working under very mild reaction conditions. GVL is an import platform chemical for pharmaceuticals, food industry, biopolymers synthesis and can be used as a fuel additive, offering higher performances with respect to bioethanol.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
