This paper deals with the production and diffusion of big stone crosses in Galicia since the Early Middle Ages. The cruceiros have become an identifying symbol of the region, making its landscape with a very high number of examples, over 10.000, created over a long period. These cruceiros are artifacts consisting of a base, column, capital, and cross, preferably made of local granite and standing no less than three meters tall. Despite their widespread presence, they have long been regarded as works of "folk art", in practice, neglected in their archaeological potential. Here we deal with material and immaterial aspects of the artefacts, constants and variations, traces and indicators of the production cycle, interviews the creators who still create them, given their ongoing request.

Abstract
This paper deals with the production and diffusion of big stone crosses in Galicia since the Early Middle Ages. The cruceiros have become an identifying symbol of the region, making its landscape with a very high number of examples, over 10.000, created over a long period. These cruceiros are artifacts consisting of a base, column, capital, and cross, preferably made of local granite and standing no less than three meters tall. Despite their widespread presence, they have long been regarded as works of "folk art", in practice, neglected in their archaeological potential. Here we deal with material and immaterial aspects of the artefacts, constants and variations, traces and indicators of the production cycle, interviews the creators who still create them, given their ongoing request.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
