The paper proposes a re-examination of the origins of manumissio in ecclesia in the light of Soz., HE 1.9.6-7, which attributes to Constantine three laws (τρεῖς ἔθετο νόμους) that provided the basic framework for the institution. The paper discusses the main terms of a long-standing historiographical debate, focusing on the identification and dating of these enactments. It will also examine the sources from which Sozomenus claims to have drawn the information and the authorship of the constitutions. This issue will be enquired in the context of the legislative relations between the eastern and western parts of the empire prior to the final deposition of Licinius.
