The aim of this study is to understand the role played by Italo Calvino’s engagement with philosophy in shaping his cosmic conception of literature. To pursue this goal, the text will be divided into four sections. The first will examine the contribution that Calvino’s work and intellectual approach can offer to contemporary theoretical and methodological reflections on the ‘philosophy of literature’. The second will focus on the ways in which Calvino articulated his idea of ‘cosmic literature’ in his essays, particularly when reflecting on the relationship between literature, philosophy, and science. The third section will address the ways in which Calvino develops his notion of cosmic literature, with special attention to the affinities and differences between the Cosmicomics and Palomar. Finally, the fourth and concluding section will discuss the metatextual dimension of the Cosmicomics, with particular reference to the interplay between the cosmic perspective and the combinatory method.
