This study aims to analyse populist statements observed in the Italian general press during the January 2022 Presidential election. The primary objective is twofold : firstly, to examine how so-called "populist" parties, such as Lega, Movimento 5 Stelle and Italia Viva, manipulate the image and social role of women for political and electoral purposes. Secondly, it will investigate how the press, ostensibly crafting authorized candidate profiles, relies on a repertoire of recurring themes (topoï) and clichés to comment on women's political and social role across the country. It thus ends up perpetuating a stereotypical representation of women.

Abstract
This study aims to analyse populist statements observed in the Italian general press during the January 2022 Presidential election. The primary objective is twofold : firstly, to examine how so-called "populist" parties, such as Lega, Movimento 5 Stelle and Italia Viva, manipulate the image and social role of women for political and electoral purposes. Secondly, it will investigate how the press, ostensibly crafting authorized candidate profiles, relies on a repertoire of recurring themes (topoï) and clichés to comment on women's political and social role across the country. It thus ends up perpetuating a stereotypical representation of women.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
