This essay explores the polyphony of sources in the thought and work of Maximus the Greek through a wide-ranging reinterpretation of the Terrible and Memorable Narrative and the Epistle on the Franciscans and Dominicans. Alongside the Latin sources already identified for these works, a comparison with the sources of Athonite Hesychasm reveals their connections with the Ustav and Predanie of Nil Sorskij and with the Skitskij ustav.
