The aim of this paper is to investigate the uses of dico, particularly in the form dicit, in the work of the grammarian Pompeius (5th-6th century ce). After a brief introduction on evidentiality strategies involving verba dicendi and a review of the literature on the subject, Pompeius’ relevant passages are presented, analysed and classified by type on the basis of the verb position in relation to direct speech.
