Strategies of language acquisition share several patterns with strategies of language change. Strong evidence suggests that those patterns involve universal cognitive principles. In the present paper, we show how both teaching and learning Italian need to address these cognitive principles, that, although manifested in different dimensions and levels, appear to consistently govern language processing.
