Abstract

With a po-litical condition swinging between independence and dependence on United States, Puerto Rico and its civilization are the cultural incarnation of the border. A place of debate fluid but not blurred, the Nuyorican borderland builds a singu-lar Boricua identity, result of an oppositive binarism but involved in the noma-dism taken over by the postmodern era. The paper explores the way in which Giannina Braschi’s literature problematizes the concept of borderland that, in the name of all Nuyoricans, becomes delimitation and separation (limes), but also porous habitable threshold (in limine), at the same time a place of fusion and geopolitical and civilizational friction. In the “trans” that characterizes Puer-to Rican history as well as the Nuyorican population, the cultural identity is no longer located in a third space that blurs the dissonances between colonizer and colonized, but in a subversion made possible by hybridism
