Indeed, contrary to its alleged ‘semantic opacity’, its presence triggers enunciative effects, provokes a compulsive search for meaning uncovered by various interpretants (in the sense of Rastier 1996), or can even lead to playful deconstructions of meaning. Whether in literary texts or in ‘ordinary’ texts (for example, brand names), this linguistic unit constitutes a prism through which unsuspected meanings are refracted.
