This paper offers an overview of the state of the art on classifiers in classifier languages and classifier-like devices in non-classifier languages, with a particular focus on binominal constructions ([N1 of N2] or [N1 + N2gen]). In particular, starting from the semantic parameters characterizing classifiers in the literature, a description of their application to binominal constructions in non-classifier languages such as English and Italian is provided. The question of whether such constructions can also be considered classifier-like equivalents in Slavic languages is raised and discussed, focusing on the specific group of binominals with a metaphorical N1. Various, yet unexplored issues are introduced along with proposals and perspectives from the authors in this special issue on their investigation.

Abstract
This paper offers an overview of the state of the art on classifiers in classifier languages and classifier-like devices in non-classifier languages, with a particular focus on binominal constructions ([N1 of N2] or [N1 + N2gen]). In particular, starting from the semantic parameters characterizing classifiers in the literature, a description of their application to binominal constructions in non-classifier languages such as English and Italian is provided. The question of whether such constructions can also be considered classifier-like equivalents in Slavic languages is raised and discussed, focusing on the specific group of binominals with a metaphorical N1. Various, yet unexplored issues are introduced along with proposals and perspectives from the authors in this special issue on their investigation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
