This essay aims to illustrate, from a historical-legal perspective, how the aspiration for legal unity has been a constant value in the European experience since the medieval centuries, despite the coexistence of multiple legal systems. It also examines how contemporary efforts to harmonize law within the European Union are ultimately in line with this long-standing pattern

L'articolo intende rilevare, da una prospettiva storico-giuridica, come l'aspirazione all'unità giuridica sia stata un valore costante dell'esperienza europea sin dai secoli medievali, pur caratterizzati da una pluralità di ordinamenti giuridici, e come anche gli gli odierni sforzi per raggiungere una uniformazione del diritto, all'interno dell'Unione Europea, si inseriscano, in definitiva, in questa tendenza di lungo periodo
