La Meditação di frei António de Portalegre: due versioni e un'autotraduzione di un testo devozionale nel Cinquecento portoghese

Although Fr. António de Portalegre's Meditação da sacratíssima morte e paixão de nosso senhor em estilo metrificado is often cited as an early example of self-translation or authorial translation, there are no studies on its author, on the Portuguese text, or on the Castilian translation. Published in Coimbra in 1547 and 1548 (both editions declared extremely rare, produced by João Barreiras and João Álvares, printers of the University), the two Portuguese texts present numerous variants, not only graphic, but also deletions, additions and rewritings of entire paragraphs. In 1548, a Spanish translation was published, authored by Fr. António himself. The aim of this paper is therefore to reconstruct the historical and spiritual context in which the text and its author are to be placed, to analyse the complex editorial issues related to the different editions and the self-translation, and also to reflect on the stylistic issues raised by the text.

António de Portalegre sia spesso citata quale esempio precoce di autotraduzione o traduzione d’autore, non esiste alcuno studio né sul suo autore né sul testo portoghese né sulla traduzione castigliana. Pubblicata a Coimbra nel 1547 e nel 1548 (edizioni entrambe dichiarate rarissime, uscite dall’officina di João Barreiras e João Álvares, stampatori dell’Università), i due testi in portoghese presentano numerose varianti, non solo grafiche, ma anche eliminazioni, aggiunte e riscritture di interi paragrafi. Nel 1548, esce una traduzione spagnola, vergata dallo stesso Fr. António. L’intervento mira, dunque, a ricostruire il contesto storico-spirituale entro cui inserire il testo e il suo autore, a analizzare le complesse questioni editoriali legate alle diverse edizioni e alla auto-traduzione, e anche a riflettere sulle questioni stilistiche che il testo sollecita.
