This article aims to assess whether, and to what extent, the European Union is consolidating its position as a global leader in the transition towards a circular economy through the instruments of its common commercial policy. Particular attention is devoted to the progressive inclusion of environmental commitments within the Union’s new generation free trade agreements, with a specific focus on those provisions Designed to promote the shift towards a circular economic model. The analysis also examines the potential of new instruments, such as Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships, conceived as pragmatic and flexible mechanisms. Ultimately, the article evaluates the extent to which such initiatives may enhance the Union’s role as a global leader in sustainability, while simultaneously reconciling environmental ambitions with the strategic and economic objectives underpinning its external action.
