The article interprets Pirandello’s metafiction as a fundamental dynamic of his aesthetic that follows logically from his theory of humour. Pirandello's theorization of humour appears in this respect strongly reminiscent of the Postmodern interpretation of Romantic irony by Paul de Man. The article explores the substantial points of contact between the two, arguing for Pirandello’s participation in an important intellectual attitude of self-reflexive art running through Western literature from the 19th century to the present age.
